Advancing the UK strategy for sustainable development (ENRR638)

This paper was primarily written as a contribution to the review of the sustainable development strategy. It focused on possible mechanisms for enhancing English Nature’s conservation objectives via improved environmental performance in the production of goods and services. Key issues explored in this paper included: the role of the environment in supporting economic activity; the economic impact of environmental management and regulation; the UK’s comparative environmental performance; opportunities for sustainable development in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors; environmental awareness and practices amongst small to medium sized businesses; and industry perspectives regarding the future of environmental management and regulation in the UK.
