Surveys of EU Habitats Directive Vertigo species in England (ENRR419)

The principal objectives of this study were to:

  • provide an accurate distribution of Vertigo angustior across both sites;
  • determine the snail’s abundance, population structure and habitat requirements;
  • provide advice for conservation and management; and
  • at Flordon Common to assess sampling methods and devise a protocol for monitoring.

The results showed that Florden Common supported a healthy, recruiting population of Vertigo angustior. However, the area occupied by the snail was small and vulnerable to increases in grazing levels and changes to current grazing practice, changes in hydrology, and scrub encroachment.
