The principal aim of this programme was to co-ordinate and support work on lowland peatland conservation and restoration. In order to fulfil this objective there was a need to both quantify and assess the quality of the national resource, and secondly, to identify and prioritise sites so that resources could be targeted to maximum effect over the course of the programme.
