Potential habitat creation and restoration by National Character Area (NCA) (B2020-003)

Biodiversity 2020: A strategy for England’s wildlife and ecosystem services has an aspiration for the creation and restoration of 200,000ha of priority habitat by 2020 (Outcome 1b). The information presented here provides a geographical breakdown of that aspiration by National Character Area (NCA). It was compiled for the Biodiversity 2020 Terrestrial Biodiversity Group (TBG) in 2012, and was updated in 2013.

The information consists of:

  • A spreadsheet that presents an assessment of how much creation and restoration might be possible for each priority habitat in each of the 159 NCAs.
  • A set of maps that show the relative contribution that each NCA might make to each of the individual habitat aspirations.
  • The paper presented to TBG in 2012, which explains how the spreadsheet and maps were developed, and how they can be used to aid decision making.

Please note that the spreadsheet and maps will be subject to further refinement.
