This MSc research project was to determine the spatial distribution of invertebrates in mature oak canopies in Yarner Wood NNR. Three sampling methods were used;
- arboreal pitfall traps
- vortex fan traps
- bubble wrap traps
in 2 woodland habitats:
- previously coppiced
- open /mix conifer woodland
Ground pitfall traps were deployed around base of tree trunks to assess the relationship between ground fauna & canopy fauna. Results found that vortex fan traps convey high presentation of arthropods. The pitfall trap showed the highest abundance of specimens. The arboreal pitfalls could be a good sampling technique within the canopy.
This work has been catalogued as part of the NNR Record Project and the results can be made available on request.
