East Dartmoor Woods and Heaths NNR: Yarner Wood NNR; Habitat influences on breeding activity of the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) (RP2759)

This is a research project on the breeding activity of pied flycatchers in Yarner Wood NNR, undertaken in 2009-10 as part of a BSc qualification. The impact of a range of habitat factors on the provisioning rate, average nestling weight and proportion of chicks successfully fledging were measured, and were not found to have a significant effect on any of these breeding indicators. Therefore no major alterations to current management were recommended. However, the timing of heavy rainfall was found to influence fledging rates, and so further research into weather impacts was proposed.

Closing statement

This project found that the habitat variables studied had no effect on the measures of breeding activity used, but that rainfall timing did have some influence. The work has been catalogued as part of the NNR Record Project.
