East Dartmoor Woods and Heath NNR: Phenology and the effects of trophic mismatch in three UK woodland bird species, wood warbler, blue tit and pied flycatcher (RP1676)

The aim of this MSc study was to assess the effects of trophic mismatch on fitness parameters and breeding output using three temperate woodland bird species dependent on a brief annual food peak. Productivity, nest outcome and offspring quality are all demonstrated to be significantly reduced with increasing asynchrony. Reduced breeding output is a mechanism for possible population declines and understanding how trophic mismatch affects systems is vital for modelling responses to climate change.
