Porthleven cliffs coastal protection scheme (ENRR029)

This report describes a study carried out to evaluate alternative engineering solutions for Phase 8 of the Porthleven Cliffs Coastal Protection Scheme in the light of concerns regarding a proposed scheme involving a wall which would partly cover a geological exposure designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The report identifies that both beach and cliffs at Porthleven are eroding. Three types of scheme were evaluated: conventional facing walls, cliff stabilisation schemes and cliff toe wave protection, and the latter scheme accepted. Further surveys and appraisals of wave conditions followed by hydraulic model testing are required to confirm and optimise the proposed solution. The report also notes that extraction of beach material at Gunwalloe Creek is exacerbating erosion of the beach between Porthleven and Gunwalloe and states that steps should be taken to stop this extraction, revoke the licence and to seek redress for historic damage caused by over-extraction.
