Status of the adder Vipera berus and slow-worm Anguis fragilis in England (ENRR546)

This report summarises a questionnaire survey undertaken to assess the status of the adder and slow-worm in England. It addresses issues such as population size, site size, fragmentation, population trends, and factors for increases/declines. 249 sites are reported on, just over half of which were designated sites or protected areas of some sort. The report raises various conservation issues, notably the apparent major decline of adders in the Midlands, and the perception that public pressure has had a significant negative impact on populations.
