England's peatlands: carbon storage and greenhouse gases (NE257)
This report describes the extent and current condition of England’s peatlands and estimates the amount of carbon they store, as well as the amount of carbon being lost. It then assesses the potential carbon savings that widespread restoration could deliver and evaluates the economic costs and benefits. Finally, the report describes the current policy framework for peat protection and restoration and sets out ideas for further progress.
