The Improvement Programme for England’s Natura 2000 Sites (IPENS) is developing a suite of eleven Theme Plans. These Plans will address the issues that impact on, and affect the condition of, multiple Natura 2000 sites and which are difficult to resolve on a site-by-site basis. The project has identified the need for a Theme Plan on Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition.
Nitrogen deposition has been recognised in the 2013 Article 17 reporting process as one of the main pressures to a wide range of European habitats, putting the condition of a large proportion of sites at risk. An internal technical workshop was held in Cambridge on 30 August 2013 on the topic of nitrogen deposition and Natura 2000 in England.
