The Improvement Programme for England’s Natura 2000 Sites, supported by European Union LIFE+, is a new strategic approach to managing England’s Natura 2000 sites. It will enable Natural England, the Environment Agency, and other key partners to plan what, how, where and when they will target their efforts on Natura 2000 sites and the areas surrounding them.
The IPENS directory of mechanisms provides a set of high level and specific mechanisms that can be used to implement action for Natura 2000 sites. This directory formed a ‘drop down’ list in the spreadsheets that were used to develop the IPENS Site Improvement Plans.
The directory is a non-exhaustive list of potential mechanisms for protected sites. The list contains the most prominent mechanisms but is not a complete list of all possible mechanisms that could be used to resolve an issue. Not every mechanism is applicable in every situation and implementation will depend inter alia on available resources.
