Yarner Wood NNR: The influence of age on arrival date and breeding performance of the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca (RP1350)

This study investigates the effects of age and date of birth on males’ arrival date, fecundity and productivity of Pied Flycatchers at Yarner Wood NNR in Devon. It was predicted that older birds would arrive earlier to breed, lay first eggs earlier, have larger clutches and more fledglings. Surveys were conducted during the breeding season of April to July 2010. Nest-boxes containing nests were inspected at every few days, for eggs and the date of the first egg was recorded. Rainfall and temperature was recorded. No effect of age on arrival, date of first egg or productivity, but first egg dates were earlier after warm, dry periods.
