In 2000 lichen monitoring of 18 tagged trees was set up within the Bovey Valley Woodlands SSSI. The trees were selected because they supported ‘rare or unusual species or because they had communities which would be valuable indicators of future environmental change ‘. Monitoring was carried out in 2011 as more than a decade had elapsed since the initial survey. In the long term changes can be used to inform future management.
