This report examined the geographical distribution of critical loads exceedance in English Nature’s natural areas resulting from the deposition of sulphur and nitrogen. The results showed that sulphur deposition caused several natural areas to be at high risk, especially in the English uplands. However, future deposition indicated that this problem will be much reduced, although several regions do remain at risk. However, the exceedance of nitrogen critical loads is a severe problem for many upland and lowland natural areas. The results were discussed in the context of possible future controls on pollutant emissions and indicated that significant additional control measures would need to be implemented to protect many of England’s natural areas.
