The Long Term Monitoring Network (LTMN) collects data to track long-term biodiversity change, and understand the causes of change, across a range of habitats important for their nature conservation value. Co-located vegetation, soils (physico-chemical and biological measures), butterflies, air quality, and land management data is collected at 37 sites across England. Data collection began in 2009, with protocols based on those of the Environmental Change Network (see also the Environmental Change Biodiversity Network (ECBN)).
Data collected by the project is indicated in the table here. Data is published on the pages of the relevant data collection pages (see links at the bottom of the page), with the exception of air quality data which is published on UKAir. Nitrogen deposition calculated from the published air quality data will be available on the air quality protocol page in the near future. Vegetation data can also be found published as individual surveys via the Data by Sites pages (link below), but the species data are consistent with the taxonomy at the time of collection and are not consistent over time; see the data on the vegetation protocol page for taxonomically consistent data.
If you download any datasets, we would be grateful if you could tell us how you are using the data by emailing LTMN@naturalengland.org.uk. This helps us understand how useful the data is and justify the continuation of the programme. All data is published under the Open Government Licence.
Please email us (LTMN@naturalengland.org.uk) with any queries or comments, or to join our mailing list for notification of newsletter publication and survey volunteer opportunities.
