The adaptation of the natural environment to climate change is well developed in theory and adaptation principles have been published. However, there are still a number of challenges in implementing practical adaptation measures on the ground.
Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) are major landscape scale conservation initiatives in twelve priority areas of England. They provide an opportunity to build climate change adaptation into major conservation initiatives at an early stage and at an appropriate scale, as well as an opportunity to learn how people and organisations can best work together to enable adaptation.
Recognising these opportunities, Natural England, working on behalf of a partnership including Defra, the Environment Agency and Forestry Commission, commissioned this report to assess and facilitate climate change adaptation in NIAs.
