Managing Registered Battlefields (NE791)

Managing Registered Battlefields has been jointly developed by Natural England, Historic England, Forestry Commission, and the Battlefields Trust. Published in 2026, it brings together 30 years of experiences managing these sites since the first Registered Battlefields were designated in 1995.

It is designed to support advisors, land managers, and communities who have an interest in the management of Registered Battlefields in England. It is a supplement to Natural England’s publication Nature Recovery and the Historic Environment.

These sensitive landscape-scale historic sites face unique challenges today. Sustainable management requires an integrated approach that brings together farmers, land managers, and specialists from the historic and natural environment sectors.

Through a series of case studies and best practice Managing Registered Battlefields shows the potential for land designated as Registered Battlefields to deliver more for people, nature and heritage, whilst continuing to produce food and growing the rural economy.
