The 2025 Weed Control Handbook: Guidance for Herbicide Use on Nature Conservation Sites has been updated from the 2002 Herbicide Handbook and is a designed resource for nature conservation site managers, contractors, and landowners. It offers general guidance on control methods, including use of herbicides to manage problem species and weeds that threaten habitats, such as Special Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSIs), and nature reserves.
The handbook provides information each step in managing unwanted vegetation after it has been discovered. This includes:
- A decision tree for making informed choices on managing vegetation effectively and with the lowest environmental risk.
- A summary of the main non-chemical methods of vegetation management
- A detailed list of the primary vegetation and species that require control, active substances that control them, and application methods and timing.
- Summary sheets on key herbicide substances, providing information on efficacy and environmental fate.
- An overview of relevant legislation governing weed control.
This was a multi-year project, part funded by Defra. It included cross-NE consultation, a literature review, focused updates on areas of concern and user testing.
This edition highlights an integrated pest management (IPM) approach, providing tools for evidence-based decision-making. Additionally, it offers links to further resources for effective and sustainable management.
This handbook will be a useful resource for anyone involved in making decisions about vegetation control on woodlands, hedgerows, riverbanks, or other semi-natural habitats. The information on relevant government legislation and approved pesticide products was updated on January 2025.
