Peatland Restoration Register Report (NERR179)

The Peatland Restoration Register is a map layer describing the location of peatland restoration projects in England. It was created to support recording delivery against the Environmental Improvement Plan commitment to restore 280,000 hectares of peatland by 2050. In time, the project seeks to pull together data from a range of peatland restoration data sources to provide a comprehensive picture of restoration from which statistics can be derived to monitor progress towards these commitments.

The map currently consists of data from three projects: The Nature for Climate Peatland Grant Scheme (NCPGS), Countryside Stewardship (CS) and Environment Agency Conservation Projects Database (EACPD). The map and publishable data can be viewed and downloaded from the England Peat Map Data Portal and the Natural England Open Data Geoportal. It is published under an Open Government Licence.

The report details the creation of the register data standard and explains how existing data is fit into the standard. The data are then clipped to the England Peat Map extent layer to produce a map of peatland restoration projects in England. Summary statistics are provided from the available data, confidence in reported figures is constrained by limitations in existing data fitting into the new data standard. Limitations are described and future improvements detailed.
